ECONOMY
Egypt’s economy is much diversified, with sectors
such as agriculture, tourism, industry and services with equal production
levels. Egypt is the world's largest exporter of cotton and its textile
industry is large. Other industries include the production of iron and steel,
chemicals, rubber products, refined sugar, tobacco, canned foods, cottonseed
oil, small metal products, and furniture [3].
Although the agriculture sector
continues to employ a majority of the workforce, Egypt imports about half of
its food requirements [3]. Egypt produced all the energy it consumed and petroleum
played a major part in Egypt's balance of payments. For many years, petroleum
was the most important source of foreign exchange for the government before the
workers' remittances.
